Making "Elimination Communication"-Easier!

EcaWare Baby and ecaPants were created by a mother who practices ec with her own child.* She saw a need in the EC community for potty learning pant that would help make EC easier. Dressing and undressing a baby so many times a day for potty trips can be challenging, so she found a way to make it a breeze. A training pant with a front portion that drops open! Just flip the front of the trainers down, and pop them back up when done. Simple!

The front panel flips all the way back, so they work well for a boy or a girl. The velcro (aplix) tab are encased at the edges, to keep hard surfaces away from baby. Or try the all snap version. Keep ec stress free, even when out and about!

Elimination communication, which can be practiced from birth, is a very gentle method of tuning in to your childs elimination patterns and/or the subtle cues they demonstrate when they have to use the bathroom. It is about responding to them by lovingly holding them over an appropriate recepticle to 'go', rather then having them get themselves wet or dirty. Our third baby is feeling like home. I have to admit, if you would have said this would be awesome back on November 23rd I would have screamed...But now I see it's pretty awesome.

We also think that because of this awesome-ness we can now expand into more Maternity and Baby Wearing, And as you already know our passion is Natural Parenting, Local Sustainability, Originality and the Power of Informed Choice. Pretty powerful things we are proud to be supportive of. With this in mind we have teamed up with some amazing local artisans such as Skipper Joe's, quality natural wood toys, including planes and trains, as well as sturdy wood table and chair sets all made with Family Love on Hornby Island.
We have expanded our already wide selection of wool felted toys to include a new artist in the Valley who will be launching her business soon(we do have a sneak peek of her waldorf inspired treasures in store)

Tess's Monsters are adorable wool stuffed creatures made in Campbell River, We still adore Kim Seeley's Toad in a Tree Hats(which we have a large order hot off the needle)

So, we have been busy bee's ordering and planning, organizing and renovating...

All our diapers will soon be restocked on nice new shelving along with a few new brands and styles!

Bright Shiney and New

So here we are. In our new space....A part of me is annoyed that we have to get used to
all this change, different door bell, the view, light switches, its a long list. However an even bigger part of me embraces this change and seriously, there's so much FOOD around here!
ZenZero, Broken Spoke, Grotto/Union Street Grill, Mad Chef... for a Veggie Eater-this is great news!

There is something in this universe that is making us be with water, not sure what but can you stop already??!! Our "Consignment Garage" leaks...yeah more water...Good news is we get a new garage door any day now and then we will be ready for YOU. But until then we cannot accept anymore clothing items. Save them until Monday Please!

Thanks to everyone for your awesome support, you are what got us through this. Our store was more than a place to work, it was our passion and it's because of all you that this is even possible.

This picture of the tramatic event that happened Tuesday 23rd at 1:30pm-actually makes me rather excited...Now. At the time there were FireFighters, Removed toilets for water dispersement, Tears, Screaming, Shaking, Hugs, Support, Cinnamon Buns and now we see the "Silver Lining"

Karen McKinnon invented the "Silver Lining" She with her Buds at Roots the Salon created happiness from disaster.

This wasn't our "job" it was our 3rd child. We didn't decide to bring in Cloth diapers and our unique new products to get rich-this is our passion, it's all passion for us. And now its Wet. Wet beyond wet and dirty. But we were very lucky to have our Consignment section saved-how we are baffled but untouched. Thank you water gods for saving our "bread and butter"

Now with the help of this amazing community we carry on-in many ways better off. Our Spirits are soaring and our new sign will be high....

Safe Baby Wearing

We have seen and heard alot about safe baby wearing in the media these days, this subject is very important to us. We promote Attachment Parenting choices including wearing your children. It's proven to be benefical to you and the babe. lets start with a few reason why babywearing is great;

1. You can feed your baby while still taking care of your needs
2. You can shop, cook, and walk while baby is close and near you
3. Your baby will feel loved and safe at all times while your hands free!
4. Your baby will cry less
5. Your baby gets your view
6. You get to snuggle and interact while your hands free!
7. Baby Wearing is beneficial to your baby's hip development

Safe Baby Wearing and Correct Positioning are Important to us

For Newborns, we do not promote Pouch slings, or Padded ring slings, as well as Soft Shell Buckle Carriers-for extended use. In the toddler Stage, pouches and padded slings are great for hip carries!

We do promote Woven wraps(Storchenwiege) Stretchy Wraps(Moby, Panda) and unpadded Ring Slings(Sewfunky)

For older babies 15lbs and up(general) a Mei Tai(Baby Hawk) or Soft Shelled Buckle Carrier(Boba 2G)(Pipa Pack) as well as the continued use of Woven Wraps and Unpadded Ring Slings, are all great choices.

Having your newborn baby properly positioned on your body is crucial to hip development and digestion to name a few. Baby being in an upright position always facing you(never facing out!) is safest with the frog leg position with feet out of the wrap or sling.
We never promote the cradle position for any age.

Here we are in the middle of another beautiful Autumn.
We are growing along as the leaves are falling.

We are greatly expanding our "new" section of the shop, we feel so passionate about natural parenting choices-we really enjoy bringing in the products we use and love in our own homes. Everything we sell is either Organic, Locally made, Ethically Traded or a Family Business. We connect with all our suppliers, distributors and business owners to ensure we can reach maximum customer service.
Our Reusable Diapers have all be used and are being used by us and our staff, we have tried and tested many brands-troubleshooting-we can help! We now carry many tools to make this journey easier, diaper sprayers, wet bags, bum sprays and salves, reusable wipes, detergent, odor control and more!

Technical Troubles

Our wonderful Website is down at the moment. Our fantastic tech person is frantically trying to repair it and hopefully we will be back online later this week.
All our Resource Schedule events are available by brochure in store and on our chalk board up in the store as well.

We have registrations on for Prenatal Yoga, Mom and Baby Yoga, Infant Massage, Birthing From Within we host La Leche League and the Attachment Parenting Playgroup.

We will be welcoming Sky Hellyar to our Yoga team to introduce some beautiful Yoga Workshops details coming soon.

Our Studio is also available to private and group rental. We supply, 20 chairs, Washroom, children's play area, Weigh Scale, Chalk Board, Tv-VCR/DVD, Tables, Tea Cart and a large Lending Library!

Who said you can't have comfort and style? Designed with you and your baby in mind. This is a front and back baby carrier. The straps criss-cross each other on your back to distribute the weight of your baby evenly so you don't have a constant pulling on your shoulders. ( It also has a sternum strap for when you have the baby/toddler on your back.) This carrier will take you from small baby (when they can hold their head up) to toddler (35-40lbs). You put the carrier on adjust it (dual adjusting buckles for ease) and than open the front to put the baby in, so easy.

All the packs are hand made, triple stitched, and reinforced in areas that have more weight on them. Three layers of material are used for the main body. Padding for the head and legs for comfort, plus a bonus hidden pocket in the front panel. A variety of designer fabric is used for the front panels.

The base of the pack is 12" with darting which makes a more comfortable sit for the baby. The widest point is the headrest which is 14" . The body height is 19". 3.5 inch padded shoulder straps (adjust to 33') are comfortable and help distribute the weight across your shoulders and back. The waist belt is 4 inches high and padded with a dense foam for maximum support. The belt is can extend to 60" inches long( longer custom straps are available) The packs fit most people between just under five feet to just over 6 feet.

We sold the first prototype packs last year and we are over-joyed to have them back!

Well we have been a little behind on our blog lately, mainly because we are working on alot of projects, Switching to a computerized POS system and it's a busy time of year.

A few things we have on the plate these days is our First Annual Beach Day Aug 22nd from 12-4 at Kye Bay in Comox. We are very excited about this event as we really love alot of our customers and need a chance to play together with all the kids! So bring a snack to share and all your beach gear. See you there and tell your friends!

Back to the computerized POS system....As most of you know, we are a very active Consignment store and as we have been growing the paper work and files are taking over! So having a system with tracking and taking care of all the silly stuff for us is going to be great. And super fun to "beep" all the transactions through the till!

Baby Hawk, Asian Style Carriers

The Baby Hawks have arrived! We are so happy to add this great carrier to our Baby Wearing section. We now stock 6 different carriers and we plan to add more as we grow.

We are so pleased to be working with Sam our resident baby wearing expert, she is heading out on her next adventure - baby wearing school in Ohio. She will be back to bring us great things!

Now onto the new new Mei Tai carriers!

Mei Tai's are Chinese inspired baby carriers that offer 4 long straps that are tied around the caregiver. Baby's and Toddlers up to 40lbs can be carried on your front, back and hip.

The Baby Hawk Mei Tai can fit up to a womens size 22/24 and a mens xxl. Baby Hawk also ofers longer straps when needed.

A Mei Tai is a great newborn carrier and is great for nursing. Baby's are safe and content in the upright position.

No Competition Games

We are introducing some new games to our shelves this week.
We are proud to have Family Pastimes board games here!

Family Pastimes, Co-operative games
"play with each other not against each other"

Play as friends, not as enemies! Our games foster the spirit of co-operation. Players help each other climb a mountain, make a community, bring in the harvest, complete a space exploration... They are never against each other.

After all, the initial impulse to play a game is social; that is, we bring out a game because we want to do something together. How ironic then that in most games, we spend all our efforts trying to bankrupt someone, destroy their armies — in other words, to get rid of one another! We soon learn how to pick on the other person's weaknesses in order to win the game.

The challenge. In sum, games are used in various settings and for various reasons, Socialization, entertainment, academic learning, character growth, etc. Whatever your objective, we invite you to realize them by co-operative means. Parents and teachers trying to teach children to share, be kind to living things, and help others out often are troubled by games and recreation programs which undermine these values. Our games provide the opportunity to experience sharing and caring behavior. We simply don't have enough of such experiences.

We have about 10 different games in store and more to come!
These games are a family favorite of ours, and the price is right too! All games $15!

AMP One-Size DUO

The new AMP one size Duo pocket diaper (patent pending) is a revolutionary new diaper that combines both the benefits of the AI2 diaper and the pocket diaper all in a one size. The intelligent snap placement allows this diaper to have three different rise options and multiple tummy and thigh settings for a custom fit from birth to potty training (7-35lbs). The outer waterproof layer is a soft durable laminated PUL and the inside is a dreamy soft layer of custom milled stay dry fleece that is designed to wick wetness away and keep baby dry and comfortable. The envelope opening is large enough for easy stuffing and is placed at the front of the diaper to make removing the insert easy and mess free.

To use snap the rise adjusting snaps to the appropriate setting and place insert inside the diaper. Place the diaper under baby and fasten the tummy and thigh snaps at a snug but comfortable position.

To use this diaper as an All in two diaper, place the insert on top of the fleece making sure that the absorbent insert is between the elastic gathers instead of placing the insert inside of the envelope opening. If the diaper is still dry replace the absorbent insert with a dry one and re-use the diaper.

So we have to announce our dear Jesse is leaving soon to ad to her family...her little peanut is due pretty soon so we are hiring for a part time position.

The selected person will be, reliable, available, have childcare and transportation. This employee will have to have the same passion we feel about families and community.Retail experience is helpful. We operate a cash register and we are upgrading to an integrated software program. Some computer experience will be helpful as well. This position can lead to benefits, raises and promotions for the right person.

That nice sunny time of year, we have our hanging basket of flowers outside, new flowers in the garden beds at the center...Feels so alive in the sun. At the store we are getting in lots of new products and getting ready for some of our big events such as the Birth Bellies and Babies Fair, Saturday May 29th at the Filberg, our very own Jesse is a co-ordinator for this event :) Then we have the Nanaimo Baby Fair a huge event reaching families all over the island that's June 5th and 6th, come for live entertainment and great guest speakers and Vendors galore! Kristina, Jesse and Myself all have little girls in the Pantuso Dance Groove 2010 Recital happening at the Sid Williams this coming week, Musical Theatre, Dance and Tap are what we love. Next year we will recruit Helen and Jaak ;) It's not work related but we are all involved and its exciting!

May 29th from 10-4 is the 2nd Annual Birth Bellies and Babies Fair hosted by the Comox Valley Doula's. These relaxed, friendly classes will allow you to spend a little time each week focusing on this life-changing experience. Suitable for women at any stage of their pregnancy, we will use the principles of Pilates to help your body cope with pregnancy, birth and care of a newborn.

As we progress through the exercises, you will learn how some of the physical and physiological changes in pregnancy affect joints, ligaments and muscles, helping you understand how Pilates can be so beneficial during pregnancy.

As well as exercises to help you cope with those changes, we will also include exercises to build strength and stamina for some of the positions of pre-labour and labour recommended for an easier birth. Other exercises will help you prepare for some of the physical challenges in caring for your newborn, reducing the chance of strains and repetitive strain injuries.

We will end each class with simple relaxation techniques to help with pregnancy and child birth.

And maybe best of all, this will simply be a wonderful opportunity to meet and share experiences with other mums-to-be!

Early Communication -- From the moment a parent meets that little one, there is a strong desire to understand. What is he thinking? Is he hungry, tired, too cold, content? Early on, every baby also has an innate desire to communicate.

In a Kindermusik Sign & Sing class (developed by Signing Smart™), we give parents the tools and knowledge to communicate with their babies using American Sign Language. Through songs and play, both parents and babies learn signs for words like “mommy” and “eat,” and as well as practical signs like “more,” “milk,” and when he’s “all done.” This research-proven signing class for hearing children speeds language development, eases frustration, and enhances long-term learning abilities.

Curriculum Description
Age Range: 6 months to 3 years
Class Structure: 5 or 10 classes in a semester—varies by location
Class Length: 40-50 minute class each week
Class Size: Class with no more than 12 children with parents

What a Parent and Child Experience In Class
Play, sign, and sing -- Using everyday items in engaging small and large group activities, we’ll sing songs and practice the sign as we say the words, play with toys, and help the children learn both the spoken word and the sign.

The evening will include a short presentation about Waldorf education as well as information about Saltwater School and plans for September 2010. This will be followed by a question and answer period. We will have application packages available to take home or submit. Our teacher(s) will be available to answer questions as will our Board of Directors.

For this special evening the application fee of $50 will be waived. You are not obligated to submit your application during the evening but may take it with you and submit your completed application after the Registration Evening without being charged the fee.

The Prenatal Breastfeeding Class is covered over 2 evenings April 5th and 12th from 6:30-8:30pm. The cost is $50 per couple.
This is an indepth breastfeeding class, leaving nothing out.

We are back from sun and fun filled Mexico! There is alot going on at the store and the center these days lets have an update..

Birthing From Within classes are now booking for March sessions and weekend classes, please call for more info

Wednesday mornings we have Prental Yoga and Mom and Baby drop in are $12 or call to pre-register, the sessions started last week, so plenty of time!

Saturday mornings is the Flow level 1-2 Yoga, I take part in this class and Love it!

Acupressure for Childbirth

Join Dr. Michelle Hughes from Comox Valley Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine for an interactive course on Acupressure and childbirth on Wednesday February 10 at Podlings Resource Centre from 6:30-8:00 pm.

Acupressure is the stimulation of specific points on the body with pressure. These points stimulate the internal organs, influence hormone levels and increase blood flow to certain parts of the body. During labour these points promote the release of endorphins, aid in cervical dilation, increase the efficiency of contractions and reduce pain levels.

Acupressure is a natural pain relief technique that is easy to learn and helps to support a natural labour as well as partner involvement. A manual will be provided to all participants for easy acupoint location and reference.

Women report a reduction in pain, overall sense of calmness and a high level of satisfaction with the birth experience when using acupressure.

HypnoBirthing® - The Mongan Method is as much a philosophy as it is a technique. The concept of HypnoBirthing® is not new, but rather a "rebirth" of the philosophy of birthing as it existed thousands of years ago and as it was recaptured in the work of Dr. Grantly Dick-Read, an English obstetrician, who, in the 1920s, was one of the first to forward the concept of natural birthing. The method teaches you that, in the absence of fear and tension, or special medical circumstances, severe pain does not have to be an accompaniment of labor.

You will gain an understanding of how the birthing muscles work in perfect harmony--as they were designed to--when your body is sufficiently relaxed and you trust birth. You will learn how to achieve this kind of relaxation, free of the resistance that fear creates, and you will learn to use your natural birthing instincts for a calm, serene and comfortable birth.

Our Year in Reflection 2009

January**Finding our feet in our new space, what a great change! (we moved to the new store in December 2008)

February**Participated in the Grab your Bag Campaign Comox Valley. We also brought in 3 new diapers!

March**Vancouver Island Baby Fair, Kris and I went as customers and came flying back with Dolly N Boo Dresses and ambitions of exhibiting at the next Fair.
We brought in Amber Teething Necklaces, which are a best seller for us still today.

April**Volunteerd at the Compost Education site with Our Big Earth to help open up the Community Gardens. Earth Day-Volunteered with Our Big Earth at Simms Park

May**Bellies Birth and Babies Fair, hosted by the local Doulas, very successful for us! More diapers into the store, 1 being the popular Rumparooz. We brought in the beautiful Tree Branch Blocks, one of our favorites.

June**We Celebrated our First Birthday Owning the store, to our surprise we had line-ups a half an hour before outside waiting to come in for the fun! Implemented the 3 tier consignor rate.

Name Change Game! We asked for help to change our name, held a contest and Jessica Babcock won and Podlings was born..

July**Happy Birthday Canada/Maile :) Cowichan Clothing line-Lil'Inkers was brought in, we also brought back the Bonnet thanks to SewFunky, cutest sun hats in town!

August**Jesse started working with us, and we are now Open Mondays!!

Baby-friendly centre

Podlings Naturally Childish invites local family-focused businesses, practitioners and organizations to share their knowledge with families across the Valley through clinics, workshops and special events at the new Podlings Natural Resource Center.

The Natural Resource Center, set to open in early 2010, is a warm, welcoming space where new parents will be able to come, weigh their babies, nurse and consult a midwife, doula or lactation consultant.

There also will be clinics on everything from acupuncture for pregnancy to informed choices about vaccinations as well as pre- and post-natal yoga, massage and more.

“We want people to have a safe, comfortable space where they aren’t judged,” said Sherry Turnbull who co-owns Podlngs along with Kristina Jespersen, both local mom entrepreneurs. “In this space, parents or parents-to-be can learn about options for everything from hypnobirth to cloth diapering.“

With that in mind, Turnbull and Jespersen are now offering the space — about 800 square feet along Cliffe Avenue at Mansfield Drive in Courtenay — for hourly rental. The centre has a facilitator who schedules and sets up for events, making use of the space simple and versatile.

As the centre evolves, a wide range of resources including a lending and services library that businesses can contribute to will be available as well.
